Authors’ RoundTable – Your Books Can Change The World

“Read absolutely everything you get your hands on because you’ll never
know where you’ll get an idea from…” Malcolm X, Malcolm X Speaks:
Authors’ RoundTable, the opportunity to fellowship, network and advocate for
literacy and the appreciation of reading diverse works of art to inspire creative
thinking and the imagination.

The Authors RoundTable held at Highlands Regional Library on Dunn Avenue in
Jacksonville, encourages authors gathering to share their passion for writing and
experiences in a world of literature that challenge the imagination and inspire
intellectual thinking and the fun of the written word. What better way to
reach-out and connect with people of color, culture, gender,
and generational differences than through books.

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” … Ciero
Writers, bloggers, poets, artists and those with a zeal for literature are encouraged
to attend the Authors’ Round Table and learn from seasoned writers to the novice
and dreamers of future authors the process of writing and publication. Held at
Highlands Regional Library in Jacksonville, Florida the gathering of authors with
years of experience in various writing genres helps to inspire each
other and encourage growth in the process of writing.

The sharing for resources, experiences and
the “process” of writing a book(s) with help in the “birthing” process of
writing and publishing. Blogging, Vblogging, Podcasting, Poetry and other forms
of writing are accepted and encouraged. Share your passion and your platform
to harness your energy, build your knowledge, find your
Niche and expand your influence.

If you know of a youth, teen, young adult or adult interested in being a published
author encourage them to attend the Authors’ RoundTable. Parents must
accompany their children and teens and any young adults under 18 years of age.

Authors Should Understand the Value of Their Brands

The Jacksonville Public Library’s “Authors Roundtable” meets monthly at the Highlands Branch
of the Jacksonville Public Library. William Jackson of My Quest to Teach presented the use of Social Media platforms and tools to help Authors develop, expand and market their Brands.
The topics discussed were: 1.) Learning the value of Branding, 2.) Effective implementation of Blogging and Microblogging using the platforms of Twitter and WordPress (open source web development) 3.) Building digital communities: PLC Professional Learning Community, PLN Professional Learning Network, PLF Professional Learning Family and PLR Professional Learning Resource.
Mr. Jackson in collaboration with Mrs. Regina Edwards, Co-Facilitator provided authors a platform to ask questions, gain insight in how to use Social Media to promote and enhance the digital presence of their books. The use of Hash Tags, Googling themselves and authentic storytelling help build readers and followers to their content. The interactive presentation helped answer questions, allowed authors to share experiences. Tagging and Googling have become very effective tools to draw hundreds or thousands to build authors as Thought Leaders and Digital Content Innovators. Building one’s levels in Google searches requires a well-planned strategy to align with Google search parameters and allow people to see the brand Authors are creating. Further, be engaged in the Niche where like-minded people share similar interests and passions. The understanding that Books – even those that are well written DO NOT SALE
themselves. In today’s digital world, websites and social media marketing are IMPERATIVE.
Authors should know the answers to these important questions; What is your Brand?, What is your Niche?, What ways are effective to Market your books.
That begins the level of promotion and marketing properly to the community nationally and potentially internationally. Mr. Jackson shared, never be afraid to share your story. You are the expert in your field of writing and content creation, so promote yourself as a Thought Leader. Always have business cards ready and an “elevator pitch.” Think about where you are trying to move as a business, author, engager, influencer, digital innovator. Learn the language to help you navigate the world of digital engagement.

Content Creators: Establish Expectations for WordCamps in 2018

As content creators grow the need for training is increasing,
WordCamp conferences meet and many times exceed the
needs of  beginners, intermediate and veteran bloggers,
micro-bloggers, Podcasters and VBloggers.
As a speaker and participant of WordCamp conferences
a few hints before registering for any WordCamp.
You should already have certain expectations for your learning.
Having attended and spoken at several WordCamp events in
2017 the benefits are lasting and the friendships a lifetime.
The potential for continued collaborations are endless and
potentially life changing. There are different expectations
for each person if speaking or attending, there needs to
be an established plan that fits individual needs based on
the session or track.
Decide what your goals are as a content creator and how
you mesh or combine your plan to learn. The integration
of technology that can aid your business and personal
growth, build a Brand and Market yourself.
There is more to gaining readers, viewers and engagement
than a flashy web site, dazzling coding and eye stunning
photos, it takes planning and engagement.
How you’re marketing your Brand and integrating
content as an engaging and interactive element makes
a difference in achieving the goals you have set.
Attending WordCamp assists in finding
out what products, services and resources can benefit
you and your customers.
This includes make sure you have plenty of business
cards, your marketing “pitch” is practiced and your
appearance matches your Brand.
Building a Brand creates future opportunities for
investments and expansion outside of normal business
lines. The benefit resulting from investing in attending
WordCamp may take time and work,
networking and building relationships.
As a content creator you represent your business so
consider the potential of building business relationships.
Never judge a person by attire, color or culture, gain
insight on how engaging during conversation and
interaction.
Events like WordCamp / KidCamp and others like
Bar Camp, EdCamp for educators provide
opportunities to expose youth and teens to
applying social skills and learning business skills
that are important in commerce, finance and
knowledge based careers.
KidCamp in WordCamp are growing because
the future is with children and teens they
too have a stake in building their Brand and
their content. They are establishing businesses
and building awareness for their contributions.
Youth are learning how important building
relationships in business are and the
connections to future careers.
Intellectual design is key because knowledge
based careers are expanding. Through KidCamp
events youth are building self-confidence,
self-awareness, self-determination and
self-respect. There is no room for fear and
doubt because if  knowledge is lacking youth
and teens are accessing YouTube
to educate and enlighten themselves.
Today’s WordCamp means youth and teens
should have business cards to understand the
experience of participation, the excitement of
being present and seen as a contributor and
a future speaker.
Technology contains and embraces diversity so
youth and teens also must model that. WordCamp
venues contain great potential to be an awesome
experience. To build life-long and generational
intellectual learners. Access to wealth resources,
intellectual design, community activism through
digital community engagement.
Building entrepreneurial vision that allows the
embracing of adaptation, change and growth.
WordCamp is unique, engaging, interactive and
empowering.

When You Educate Women You Educate Generations

The goal of education is not to just educate that specific
person, it is a goal to educate generations that come
afterwards. Establishing education as a foundation to
achieve success can be seen when families continue to
send their children to higher educational institutions,
vocational school and even military service to work
towards a level of degree in the service of their country.

The past decade has seen an increase in careers that
require technical skill, certificates and diplomas. At the
forefront are women that see these as stable careers
to raise a family and have access to the benefits
that they may not have had from their parents. Families
of color are beginning to encourage their children to
think out of the cultural box and aim for the stars,
the seas and medical professions that explore
the inner spaces of the human bodies.

STEM, STEAM, STREAM are seen as the gateways
to achieving the American Dream and dreams that
are deferred because of social-economic situations.
The increase in mentoring groups is exposing
girls and young women to careers not thought
of that require higher order thinking, problem
solving, critical thinking, thought leadership,
creativity and out of the box developmental
abilities that foresee future challenges that
may threaten humanity on local, national
or international levels.

When you educate a mother your educating a generation
because mothers will continue to open the minds of her
children and her children’s children. Fathers provide
the support systems and help build foundations. The
recent Markerspace presentation at the Jacksonville
Public Library “STEAM INTO STEM” brought together
women in Jacksonville, Florida that show the diversity
of parenting, careers, business applications, educational
levels and entrepreneurialism.

Jax Markerspace panelists:
Shawanna Brooks, the hostesses, Akia Uwanda, Latonja Richardson,
Princess S. Rashid, and Angie Nixon. Each woman involved in
Jacksonville as community activist, business leaders and have
children in the schools systems of Jacksonville either public
or private.
The aspirations are the same for academic success, the goal of
graduating their children from high school and attending higher
education is similar, but the roads to achievements are
diverse and different. Each women are successful in their own
ways, are unified in their goals for their children to be better
educated and have better access to the resources that are open
in today with the integration and implementation of technologies
that involve STEAM INTO STEM.

Trans-formative statements: “The biggest danger of unemployment
today is not of immigration it is the advancements of technology
in robotics,” made by Princess S. Rashid a Physicist, educator,
parent and Artist. This shows that science can embrace the Arts,
there is coexistence.  The blending of STEAM and building a
relationship with careers comes into place when Angie Nixon
and Latonjay Richardson comment that the holistic approach
to education comes to play that children will not change if they
continue to be limited by their environments. The value of
exposure and relevance is real when education is applied to
careers and the changing of the mental and relevancy of what
is learned when applied in real life.

The FIRST LEGO LEAGUE, is the dream of Mark McCombs,
“I teach people how to build robots and to do what they used
to think was impossible.” Mark McCombs is the visionary of the
FIRST LEGO League competitions going on at middle and high
schools across the state of Florida . This creates dynamic
opportunities for team building in youth, teens and young adults.

Engineering, building and coding of robotics that are involved
in competitions and can be applied to real world or off world
future exploration. Women are playing key roles in these areas,
looking at the recent Hidden Figures movie that careers in NASA
and other aerospace, inner space, space travel and applied careers
are the keys for generational success academically and culturally.

STEM, STEAM and STREAM are not just acronyms to decipher
they are Real, Relevant and Ready to help youth, teens and young
adults reach their dreams and beyond. Parents check your child’s
school to see if they have a STEM or STEAM curriculum that builds
your child to reach beyond their potential and abilities. Never put
limits on the learning of your children or you will limit their
abilities to take care of themselves and their children.
Generations depend on the advancements of the children now.
If your children do not know how to aim, how will they aim
high for success?
