and all around Geek and Blerd takes more than a desire to be
famous or infamous.

The opportunities available for those who have the desire to
grow into their passions of blogging. The possibilities  are
endless and unlimited to share content with like minded people.
The power of blogging allows the writer to connect with others
that share their passions, goals and mission to build relationships
and create communities, either digital or real.

There is potential power in creating digital content that can build a
Brand and establish a person’s Niche. Being empowered with a
passion to create content must be followed by a plan to share and
eventually market that content.

Many people are learning how to be a journalist in dynamic areas
they are passionate about. In my Educational Technology and Social
Media class at Edward Waters College students blog each week on
what they are passionate about. They are reinforcing their writing
skills and building their literacy skills, reading abilities and increasing
their collaboration opportunities.

In the educational environment it is important to understand that
writing can build skills that can be used in business, commerce and
finance. Learning why writing is important and how to apply writing
abilities are vital to success in many careers. Students in HBCUs
or Historically Black Colleges and Universities are learning that
applying the skill of writing is allowing them opportunities in fields
not thought of before.

Blogging is not exclusive to writing: Tumblr, Instagram, Microblogging
on Twitter, Podcasting and even Vblogging or video blogging with
YouTube or Vimeo. The content is the glue that bonds the reader to
the creator and creates a relationship based on supply and demand.

Students from Edward Waters College will be attending
for the first time the FlBlogCon. Provided a unique opportunity
that will be engaging, interactive, eye opening and
transformative in how they see the integration of technology outside
of college and education.

Choosing your Niche…..
what is your area of expertise?
who is your target audience?
what is your skill set that you can promote?
what training do you need to solidify and expand
your knowledge?
do you need further education?
do you need certifications?
do you need to attend conferences, workshops and summits?

The process of becoming a successful blogger seems
daunting sometimes, but is necessary to separate
from the pack that seems to imitate, immolate, copy
and simulate others. To separate yourself from the
pack it is important to be authentic and unique.
What do you have to offer that others do not?

Choose your Topics:
what do you want to write about?
what is your background knowledge?
what do you want to accomplish ?
who do you want to connect with?
what are your associations?
are you involved in your community?
do you volunteer?

Do you show your Passion:
Topics are vast and unending, but what are you
knowledgeable about and passionate about?
When people talk to you, you should not have to
tell them your passions, they should see it in
your eyes, mannerisms, your expressions and your
behaviors online and off.

Create a Blogging Calendar:
how often are you going to blog?
when do you want your posts to be published?
when are you able to sit down and write?
do you need to do research?
are you going to integrate video?
are you going to expand to a Podcast, Facebook Life,
Periscope or other Social Media platform?

Make Your Content Shareable:
how can people access your content in SoLoMo
environments (Social Local Mobile) and on what devices?
what connections do you implement to allow readers to share?
do you optimize your photos and images for size and type?
do you encourage sharing?
sharing is caring?

Analyze your Analytics:
take the time to study your data…
apply the information to expanding your blog in
diverse markets…
what does the data say about who your visitors are?
where are they coming from?
which tool meets your needs the best for which demographic?

Quality or Quantity:
when is it best to work on a blog?
when is it best to post a blog?
how many do you write at a time?
you should always go for quality not quantity
take the time to write, re-write and edit

Get your own Domain Name:
this is your address, your personal site for
posting content that represents you.
your domain name is part of your Brand so choose carefully

Develop Your Brand:
what are you known for?
what do you want people to learn from you?
your Brand is your promise for quality content

Uniqueness:
people look for unique content that they
can identify with and follow….
what do you have to offer in unique content?
build your followers…

What is your mission for Your Blog:
you have to determine the direction of your
blogging..
do you have a style?
do you have a growing relationship with readers?
are you being published someplace?
are you planning to make money or do you want
to provide just information ?

Florida Blogging Conference should help you
answer these questions and more. Figure out
ahead of time what sessions you want to attend
and how you are going to apply the knowledge
you gain.
Attendance is powerful, but the application of

Africans and Blogging A Paradigm Change

connects people to your message.”

This quote is intended to encourage Africans that
their thoughts, experiences, and convictions to share
their story cannot stop. The opportunity to share life
and cultural experiences must be written
and blogged about to share a true story of African
people, African civilization, African culture and
African history.

Blogging opens doorways to learning encouraging
intellectual exchanges,  building thought leaders,
communities of digital cohesion and uniting
people of diversity. Unifying people even if they
have differences of  ideas, religion or philosophy,
blogging can be a connection. The  connective power
of blogging using digital tools allows Africans to
share content not just locally, but globally. There was
a time the  only stories that came from Africa where
from mainstream European media that did not share
the African story in a positive light, with the use of
Social Media and mobile technology accuracy, truth
and openness can be shared.

Africans like Michelle Atagana, editor of Memeburn, one
of South Africa’s leading tech blogs. Her involvement
has seen changes in the influence of writing/blogging.
Stating that, “For Africans, in terms of getting online,
I would say maybe in early 2004 and 2006, that was
the emergence of blogging,” “If you want a magic period,
I’ll say 2008 to 2009.” This shows that Africa
is not far behind in the world, there are challenges in
wired and mobile infrastructures, but this is being
addressed by collaboration with mobile
tech companies, the military and even non profit
organizations that are servicing the people not
just the corporations.

The ability to share real time content, not just written
text, but photos, video and multimedia elements makes
a profound statement of truth and reality in Africa.
American Social Media is based on the “social” aspects
of communication. The day to day events that
Americans go through, in  Africa the scope is much
different, content ranges from economic,
educational, political and cultural exchanges that
influence the dynamics of African life. Youth, teens
and young adults that have the opportunity to access
Wifi or have service providers emulate Americans of
similar age with access to music, sports and
entertainment. The dynamics of Social Media and
blogging are similar, but the foundation is what is
happening directly to the mental, physical and
emotional well being of people in cities, towns and
even the country side of Africa.

E-commerce is being affected, the power and influence
of online information is influencing economic markets.
Consumers are able to make choices that they
did not have before. To purchase locally and globally
in markets once closed to Africans. Business owners
like Mike Saunders, CEO of South African digital
marketing company, Digitlab has stated that, “If you
have something of  value to add to a market, to an
industry or to consumers and you share that value
with people (through Social Media), you can become
very influential with people.”

During this growth in infrastructure, mobile devices,
and even the educational levels to use diverse
technologies Africans are being exposed to a world
where they can have instant connection with the world.
Because of the Social Media world opinions will change
and the mindsets and perceptions of African people
will change, the perceptions of African people will
have to change to allow a more inclusive
and equitable opportunities in commerce, education,
politics and other key areas of growth. Blogging
allows the sharing of ideas not just in text on diverse
digital platforms, thus creating a powerful tool
that influences thoughts.

Africans need to continue to create their own content
because Africa needs to continue to grow itself outside
of European colonization. The physical
colonization has changed, next is the continued
psychological ending of being colonized for centuries.
Africans must continue to find their Voice, share their
stories and build a foundation on intellectualism while
building each generation to embrace, strengthen and
flex their intellect, their creativity and develop through
blogging innovative ideas from African young people.

Everything in Africa is a powerful source of content to
be created by Africans of all ages, generations,
educational, economic, cultural and political background.
From business and commerce, industry to education,
movies to mythology, history and culture, music
and the arts, all are fuel for the fire of creativity and
innovation in blogging. The higher education system
of Africa has a daunting task to build
new and empowered educational leaders that will
continue to move Africa into the 21st century and
beyond. Education is the key to allowing Africans
to apply the multi-talented skills needed to forge a
new path. African higher education, must work with
high schools and lower educational levels to prepare
them to be future  students in the institutions of
higher learning or vocational education.

Content comes in all forms so the educational
structure of Africa will have to change in order for
its students to graduate with the skills to compete
in a  global economy.

The comparison can be seen in the power of content,
how the writings of Chinua Achebe can be shared
through generations by Social Media, the sharing of
poetry and short stories by Wole Soyinka and other
African writers and story tellers.
Branding and marketing can be seen in the similar
stories of the Yoruba religion of Africa and Sango,
deity representing thunder like Thor the Norse god.
Marvel is making millions from this centuries old
story of Thor, but just imagine if Sango
was used first, how Africa could benefit from the
globalized marketing and commerce.
The cognitive and emotional influence to African
boys and girls to read an African story that shows
their continent on a global platform and
encouraging reading, literature, cultural pride
and the need for the growth in writing/blogging
by more  African boys and girls.

There are millions of stories waiting to be told
in Africa, it is up to African  children, teens, young
adults and even adults to start blogging to tell their
stories before others grab them and tell a different
version and reap the harvest.

African’s have been denied for to long to tell their
stories, now there is a platform
and tools to amplify their voice to enable unity,
collaboration and cooperation.
Africans have a important story to tell and
blogging is the platform to do it.

William’s suggestions to grow in your journey
as a “content creator” and “thought leader.”

  1. Write as if the world is going to read your blogs,
    view your videos and download your Podcast.
    When people hear, read or view your content they
    should see, feel, hear or taste the passion for what
    your creating content about.
    2. When blogging take the time to review, rewrite,
    revise, what you have written, sometimes you have to
    come back to what you started to see a new direction.
    Don’t be afraid to re-record a Podcast or a Video Blog.
    Your content represents you!!!!
    3. Don’t trust anyone that tells you your blogs are
    “great” all the time. Have a critical eye and humility
    about your content. Ask diverse people to read your
    blogs you’re going to get different opinions, ideas,
    likes and even dislikes and perspectives.
    4. Have a hard skin and look at certain criticisms
    as room to grow. One bad opinion should not stop
    you from writing.
    5. Embrace the diversity of the world. Your blogs should
    be able to reach out to diverse audiences unless you are
    specific about who or whom you’re writing to.

    6. Don’t always write about sunshine, branch off and
    challenge your abilities to write outside your box of
    understanding and expertise. What is perplexing,
    what is disturbing, what is scary. Expand your
    abilities and challenge your skill level.
    7. When writing, write as if telling a story to a friend,
    relationships are important, building a relationship
    brings connectivity and long standing.
    8. Read other writers that you respect and admire,
    this inspires your creativity and literary growth.
    9. Storytelling paints a picture, so use words that
    encourage the imagination and tickle the senses.
    10. When writing determine if there are characters,
    challenges, conflicts that need to be overcome.
    Learn from situations and circumstances that toss
    you on your literary butt. That promotes growth.

    11. Don’t be afraid to submit your blogs to
    multiple sites. You never know who will publish
    your works. Even if you are rejected 100 times
    101 might be the one that gets you an awesome gig.
    12. Keep your passion and excitement about your
    writing, it is an extension of who you are. Don’t stress
    or over extend your writing. Some people plan,
    others just take flight. Find out what works for you.
    13. Figure out who or whom you’re writing to, leave
    opportunities to receive feedback and comments.
    14. Your writing is an important part of who you are,
    what you are growing into and how to expand  your voice.
    15. Bloggers must continue to grow in their fields, you
    may start off in a traditional blog, but be willing to
    incorporate Microblogging, Podcasting, Vblogging and
    other technologies that reach diverse audiences.

    16. Watch YouTube videos to learn, attend conferences,
    Meetups, and EdCamps, if you’re in education. Even if
    you’re not an educator attend EdCamps to learn from
    experienced educators who may own businesses and
    work as entrepreneurs.
    17. Be mindful of your content, your Brand is a
    representation of your promise for what you’re working
    to accomplish.
    18. Never assume you’re invisible, just because no one
    leaves a comment, provides feedback does not mean no
    one is watching, reading, listening or studying who
    you are.
    19. Expand your Brand by volunteering to speak at
    schools, churches, community centers to expand your
    circle and take the chance to mentor others.
    20. Blogging is a life-long journey and should be a
    life-long adventure, have fun with it.
