EWC and HBCU Students
Should Be Attending WordCamps

The WordCamp Jacksonville was a prime opportunity
for EWC and HBCU students to meet and interact with
industry professionals in the fields of web development,
graphic design, Java development, Cybersecurity and
other areas of Branding, Marketing, Advertising and
business ventures in the area of tech.
The opportunity to share their voices through tech
has never been available before in history for EWC and
HBCU students.

Emma Kent, MA, MLIS librarian of Edward Waters
College attending her first WordCamp shared the
historical importance of EWC and HBCU students to
continue to grow and be engaged is as many tech
conferences like WordCamp Jacksonville. Ms. Kent
talking to the industry leaders, developers, bloggers,
programmers, etc.

Social Media has moved beyond the traditional
blogging into a broader spectrum of interactive
engagement, connectivity, Branding, Marketing,
find a person’s Niche and even collaborations in business.
The levels of engagement, interactivity and networking
is valuable for EWC students that have dreams of
moving into new areas of careers in technology, but do
not know who to connect with.

This is a big challenge, HBCU students do not think
conferences, meetups, workshop and networking events
are important, but are dangerously wrong.
Meetups, conferences, summits, workshops and
other events are important to understand who to
connect with, where to go to connect and the
value of getting your name in the minds of
professionals that can offer Internships, scholarships,
jobs and open doors that were once closed.

The presentation
“How to be DOPE on Social Media and Relevant,”
was celebrated as bringing a diversity of
content and cultural connections. Praised
as new and exciting the presentation was
engaging and interactive.
WordPress Jacksonville is growing and providing
more opportunities through the meetups
happening each month.

EWC and HBCU students are encouraged to find
groups that support WordCamp, WordPress, EdCamp,
BarCamp and other opportunities for networking and
learning.
If HBCU students want to be involved in areas of tech
or even as entrepreneurs they still have to have access
to knowledge, resources, venture capitalists that make
the much needed  investments and have the degrees
and certificates necessary to sit at the table where
the decisions are made.

The concept of “How to be Dope on Social Media and
Relevant” is the vision of William Jackson professor
with Edward Waters College, he teaches Educational
Technology, Social Media and STEM. Professor
Jackson provides a much needed experience and
knowledge to help EWC and HBCU students to grow
and be part of industries that claim there are no knowl-
edgeable nor capable students of color and culture.
Professor Jackson has 27 years as a public educator
and teaching at EWC since 2004, he attends national and
international conferences to speak on tech issues in many
cases that are directly related to people of color and
culture and supports hiring EWC and HBCU students.

Pro. Jackson is a national and international blogger
whose content is published in Canada, South Africa,
Nigeria and throughout the United States.
There are national WordCamp opportunities and EdCamp
for EWC and HBCU students in education programs
working to be educators in schools across the country.
Students take advantage of this chances to grow beyond
imagination.

What TIGER TALKS Experience Tries to Teach Students of HBCU’s
The motto, “every tiger has a story that needs to be told,”
is shared by Professor William Jackson, instructor and
Emma Kent of Library Services at Edward Waters College.
The Tiger Talks Experience is designed to encourage EWC
students to speak at an informal venue about their passions
as students, share their dreams of future success in their career
choices, speak on life experiences that can help others overcome
challenges and what their talents, skills and abilities are.

The importance of diversity and engagement to prepare for their
future professions and travels.  Modeled after the TEDTALKS and
TEDx that have been ongoing for several years, the TIGER TALKS
Experience is a platform for HBCU students –
Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Started in Professor Jackson’s Educational Technology and
Social Media class in the Education and Urban Studies Department.
Professor Jackson wanted a way to expose EWC students to the
dynamic discussions taking place on TEDx and TEDTALKS. The
result is TIGER TALKS Experiences.
There is the hope that this will expand through a collaboration with
other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) across
the country and it grows into a national model to teach presentation
skills, the importance of articulation when speaking, research and
writing, blogging, content creation, how to establish a Brand and
even increase the opportunities for HBCU students to network for
jobs, internships and starting careers.

Blogging is important in the Educational Technology course, students
are required to establish a blog on #WordPress and connect their
Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. This is not for entertainment, but to
teach how influential Social Media and content creation are, to build
a positive dynamic digital presence and manage it like a professional.

The skills of writing, presentation and articulation are what is lacking
in graduating students across the nation as industry leaders claim.
Writing is vital as a major communication tool in the majority
of business, medicine, commerce and educational careers.

In to many cases students do not have the opportunity to learn how
to speak to large groups, how to present a PowerPoint in a formal
setting and understand the need to be published as they build their
Brands.

HBCU institutions must be diligent in making sure that their students
are able to compete in global markets that may take them to foreign
nations where the opportunities may become professionally and
financially stable. HBCU institutions must make sure their students
are proficient in writing, presentation skills, blogging online is an
option to teach writing, critical thinking and higher order thinking
skills. Students of color and culture needs to be prepared because
competition for jobs is fierce.

mental capabilities that make them smart
creatives and thought leaders, helping your
daughters to understand their personal sexuality
and seeing their value based on their talents and
abilities not sex. If you fail to teach as fathers,
you may be committing a travesty with life-long

As a parent, educator and heavily involved in
Social Media I see the elements of Social Media
Sexting, mental and sexual manipulation, sexual
bullying and self-destruction. Girls and women
must understand that just because you can post
hundreds of “selfies” and “sexties” does not
mean you do so.

Telling your story through your digital content should
come with the knowledge that people will see what
you create and judge you based on the creativity and
innovation you show. This creativity should be done
with wisdom, purpose and common sense.  Parents
make dangerous mistakes by letting their children
have free reign of the Internet without behavioral
expectations and rules. The World Wide Web
can be the Wild Wild West with content that can
range free either on the extreme Left or Right.

There are communities that are represented on
platforms that allow the diversity of the human
mind create places that are comforting and at
the same time can cause the soul to shiver.
Girls especially are attracted to the chance to
“show” themselves beyond their “personalities.”

“I’ am, was always will be a catalyst for change”
but that change must be positive and productive.

This blog “Social Media Sex and Daughters” shares
the value of parenting when girls are young and
impressionable, they do not understand the value
to share that they are more than their bodies. There
is more to girls than a size, color, a shape, cleavage,
or how sexy they can look. Perceptions are dangerous
in the digital age. Fathers must be sure to teach their
daughters the “tricks” of the game boys will use to get
into their daughters __________.

A father has a responsibility not to scare their daughters,
but to educate them on sex and sexuality. Mothers count,
but they are not men.  Daughters cannot afford to learn
from their friends either boys or girls to protect their
“pocketbooks” as the senior women like to reference.
What is private, is private and should be protected….

Social Media provides wonderful networking, and
communication opportunities, girls and women are
participating in coding – Black Girls Code, learning
how to use tech to be entrepreneurs while attending
conferences like Blogging While Brown, networking
in groups like Black Girls Rock, learning socialization
skills in groups like  Girls Inc, Journey Into Womanhood
Empowerment Resources (Jacksonville, Florida) and
Black Girls Book Club.

The online development of collaboration and connectivity
grows to help girls grow cognitively and raise their
self-esteems and self-respect. No longer do girls and
women say tech is just for boys and men, girls
and women are coding, creating dynamic content,
writing books, managing publishing companies. Girls
are thought leaders, and entrepreneurs, Black girls
can proudly claim their BLERD and Geek profiles.
African girls and women are growing into AfiBlerds
and AfriGeeks proudly earning degrees, they are
owning businesses like Anie Akpe, CEO/Publisher

matter whether they’re dark skin, light skin, brown
skin, mixed, hood, nerdy, preppy, loud, quiet or ratchet.”

Business opportunities are increasing so girls and
women should not focus on their body image they
should focus on their Brand and the Marketing aspects.
Women are networking, they are serving on boards,
in committees, forming nonprofits, and educational
initiatives.
Their Brands are worth more than gold, it is the
foundation of their existence and should always be
treated respectfully.
Girls like Jacksonville’s Taylor Richardson and
Natalie McGriff and others are inspiring other
girls to grasp hold of their dreams and grow wings
to fly beyond societal limitations and
exceed expectations no matter color and culture.

Fathers must have those conversations about
pride, hard work, dignity, trust, ethics, morals
and values. Parents must monitor their daughter’s
online activities, not out of fear, but to preserve
reputations and the developing Brands of the
future. It must be taught that, ”sex is a
temporary physical manifestation of temporary
pleasure that if unchecked can be dangerous and
self-destructive.”

Social Media is shaping the way girls and women
are viewing themselves and interacting with

Advertisers know this and will market “sexulization
of girls” through advertising. Talking about sex
and sexuality should be a discussion not a scare
tactic. Parents should share
the reality of pornography, it is not the sensual
event of dreams; it can be violent, degrading and
demeaning.
Girls and women will not get cultural and educational
validation by having multiple sexual partners. The
marketing aspect too look hot, be popular, risque,
sexy, vulnerable/aggressive, girls of color and
culture are not presented in positive situations
when it comes to sex like their white counterparts.

Parents of all colors and culture start early and
have conversations so girls feel comfortable,
confident in who they are and where
they are going in life. Parents talk to your daughters
as they mature, have honest and tough discussions.
Before any girl or young woman gets into bed with
anyone, even in alternative lifestyle’s they need
to get into that persons head first to make sure
they are not making a mistake that will curse them
through adult life.
A girl’s reputation can be destroyed with a single
video, a single picture posted online and even a flash
of experimentation. Put your value ahead of being
popular, being seen as sexy and been just seen as
who you are and what your aspiring to be.

Girls are growing into not just Black Girl Magic or
Women Magic, but Awesome Women of Magic.

Girls of all ages are involved in online
communication that has exceeded face to face
communication. They are sharing photos, videos,
emoji’s and other graphical displays of emotions
and friendships. BFF is a new word in the English
language.
The increase of a girl’s social life has transitioned
to digital relationships that travel across the
digital languages of Social Media sites.

Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and other
forms of digital communications are dominated by
the chatter of digital words, phrases, acronyms
and the occasional use of profanity and sexual
dialogue. A girl or young ladies digital life is
different than how they are in real life situations.

Direct interaction creates opportunities for
dialogue that can be respectful and caring. Technology
has opened a Pandora’s Box to potential vicious Bullying,
Cyberbullying, Cyberstalking and Sexting. These actions
have created a change in digital interactions and
etiquette. It is dangerous not to know what
Cyberbullying and Cyberstalking are.

Girls must be taught how to “talk” digitally to each
other and not to bully, or in the case of technology
Cyberbully. Brooklyn a student says that, “Parents
need to observe their child’s accounts to see what
they are doing to keep their children especially girls
safe from predators and others that would do them harm.”

The end of each school year is creating fear,
apprehension and even causing parents pulling their
children out of school early because of fear from
violence as retribution of past offenses even if it is
a minor verbal altercation or a digital misunderstanding.
Too many children and teens do not value life as it
should be valued and their natures are more violent and
less compassionate. Communication with wireless devices
has created a paradigm shift for parents, educators, and
even law enforcement in the attempts to monitor, educate
and prevent bullying actions by girls and women.

Statistics show that girls will bully using technology
more than boys and a girl’s online activity is more
vicious. Even television media has shown true to life
movies about girls bullying in the traditional sense in
the school environment and also through digital means.
The unfortunate deaths by suicide and attempted suicides
are reported weekly on national news stations that bullying
and cyberbullying creates havoc emotionally and
psychologically for girls. Girls as they mature into
women have stated that they suffer from PTSD because of
the stress resulting from bullying through middle and high
school.

Speaking at national conferences to teens and young adults,
I have spoken with women in their 30’s and 40’s that carry
the emotional scars of bullying from middle and high school.
The reality that many parents do not understand or are in
denial, girls are more likely than boys to participate in
cyberbullying, (cyber-bullying via text messages or online
via Internet).

Sharing information to empower and engage parents as the
school year comes to a close, parents need to check their
children’s Social Media accounts and their digital devices.
Parents need to understand their children, who their friends
are and even associates. The recent deaths of girls from
fights have made national attention and a warning sign to
parents. It cannot be said that this is a surprise because
there are signs, parents need to recognize them.

Schools cannot be fully blamed for bullying, because at
the end of the day, students go home to their parents,
seclude themselves in their rooms and use their digital
devices to make the lives of other girls and even boys hell
on Social Media. Parents are accountable and responsible
because they are paying for the very devices their children
are using to bully with.

The consequences of bullying do have serious emotional
and psychological consequences that can last a lifetime.
Girls who are bullied have a greater risk for depression
which can lead to drug dependency, alcohol and other
substances. As a teacher in elementary and higher education
here are some tips that may help protect kids from
cyberbullying, but it takes parents being active, engaged
and involved.

Reinforce in your children not to give out personal
information online, when engaged in online don’t fill in
personal information. In online profiles, chat rooms, blogs,
or on web site surveys be careful what personal information
you provide. Not all sites are honest and beneficial.Don’t
ever tell anyone your email or instant messaging passwords,
even your friends or BFF’s.

If someone sends a mean or threatening message, don’t
respond, get a screen capture and save it to report to
school administration or law enforcement. Don’t be a
cyberbully, because you may find yourself on the other
end of being investigated by law enforcement and school
officials. Laws are enforced where all digital devices can
be taken from the home and searched for “evidence” for
cyberbullying.

Knowing the definition of bullying and cyberbullying is not
enough, knowing that anyone can be a bully or can be bullied
is important. Prevention and protection is the goal of my
blog, to empower and educate parents. Parents need to read
student policy and procedure books, they need to read
Internet policies for the school district.
The end of the school year should be a calm transition,
not one filled with dread for the summer,
fearing being bullied, harassed and stalked.

The college years seem to move along at a snails
pace, each semester drags on at its own leisurely
pace until you notice graduation is right around
the corner. Juniors are starting to feel  the
excitement even as the summer
progresses and another academic years starts in
several months.

At the writing of this blog May 21st 2016 Edward
Waters College like other HBCUs are evaluating their
curriculum’s to determine if changes need to be made.
Schools are preparing for the future to prepare
graduates to compete in a global economy.

My college prepared me to plan for my future,
from the teachers, to the coaches as I ran track and
even the cafeteria workers they encouraged us as
students to look at our abilities as investments to
be cultivated and groomed for success.

HBCU students need a strategy, a unique plan catered
to their specific situation. The economy is not
favorable to African Americans when there is economic
volatility so HBCU students must plan and execute
their plan. It takes more than what you know
academically, who you pledged with as a Greek, what
your GPA is and even the status of your parents.
HBCU students must have an exit strategy from higher
education for their particular career options.

The terms: Branding, Marketing, Marketability,
Networking, Thought Leader, Innovator, Content Creator,
Global Analysis, Human Capital, Strategically Positioned
should not continue to be foreign terms.
In my Educational Technology and Social Media class at
Edward Waters College these terms are taught, discussed,
and implemented in blogs.

Prevent Having A Tunsil Moment

In too many cases HBCU students because of their limited
exposure and background knowledge do not know nor
understand the importance of career talent, soft skills
and marketable abilities needed to grind out a career
that is transformative and stable.
Exposure and association, collaboration and cooperation,
terms that should be familiar. HBCU students need to
start seeing themselves as their own CEO, CFO, CVO and
other terms of industry leadership.
If HBCU students are not aware of these terms they
should google them to start a mindset of structural
Branding and Marketing. How can HBCU students climb
the corporate ladder if they do not know what the
name of each step is.

Strategic planning is through networking at
community events, “mixers,” being involved in the
Chamber of Commerce, and volunteering in civic,
political and educational organizations. One of the
best places to start is LinkedIn to see what is going
on locally and “Meetups” of all levels of professional
careers. The growth in Meetup, EdCamps, Seminars,
and even online discussions like @Edu_Match on

Strategic planning for HBCU students consists of:
1. Researching a career that accesses your talents, skills,
and abilities. Allows you to grow, learn and contribute.
2. Planning your education while attending an HBCU to build
your knowledge base in the path you want to take.
3. Participate in networking opportunities, even if you
don’t know anyone show up and show out by working the
room.
4. Find mentors that share your passions and think of you
not as a friend or ticket for them, but as an investment
to a better life for you.
5. Look at each class as a paycheck to refinance your
growth and expanding career options.

6. Interact with instructors to learn as much as they do,
to learn the benefits of experiences through life.
7. Join clubs at HBCUs that provide opportunities to
apply, practice and learn new skills. Clubs provide
leadership opportunities and collaboration for projects
around campus and the community.
8. Create a calendar of priorities for academic career
pathways that lead to building a Curriculum Vitae or
Resume with more than just grades, GPA and academics.
9. Dress for success
10. Your online platforms should mature just as you do.

11. Ask a seasoned instructor to be a mentor and someone
to bounce ideas off of.
12. Use Social Media to build a following in either
traditional blogging, or expand to
Vblogging (video), Podcasting (audio),
Microblogging (Twitter)
13. Take advantage of Internships paid and unpaid.
14. Take advantage of career and academic counselors.
15. Be early to meetings, interviews.

16. When you receive emails – reply no more than a day.
17. If you make a mistake apologize and keep it moving.
18. Learn, Learn, and Learn some more.
19. Don’t worry about where you came from, focus on
where your going and where you want to be.
20. No every man or woman is compatible for you.
Not every man or woman has the same goals as you.

21. Before you get in a persons bed, get into their head
to see what their direction and goals are in life.
22. Manage your bank accounts, manage your credit,
manage your finances.
23. Plan to get your degrees while you are still young.
24. You can’t take your friends with you every where you go.
25. Take time to travel and be exposed to the world not
just your neighborhood.

Starting your career is increasing strategically
planned in this digital and technology driven world.
HBCU students must let the world know ahead of
graduation who you are and what your about.

These are just a few steps that need to be accomplished
that are listed to help establish yourself, to help in
building your Brand while building your SWAG.
When people look for you, you can have more flexibility
in what your want to negotiate in salary, benefits
and other options.

HBCU students using Social Media platforms
and tools, networking, marketing, volunteering
and even mentoring lift themselves up to be noticed
and in demand before graduation. Learning to
strategically position yourself is a planned process.
