What TIGER TALKS Experience Tries to Teach Students of HBCU’s
The motto, “every tiger has a story that needs to be told,”
is shared by Professor William Jackson, instructor and
Emma Kent of Library Services at Edward Waters College.
The Tiger Talks Experience is designed to encourage EWC
students to speak at an informal venue about their passions
as students, share their dreams of future success in their career
choices, speak on life experiences that can help others overcome
challenges and what their talents, skills and abilities are.

The importance of diversity and engagement to prepare for their
future professions and travels.  Modeled after the TEDTALKS and
TEDx that have been ongoing for several years, the TIGER TALKS
Experience is a platform for HBCU students –
Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Started in Professor Jackson’s Educational Technology and
Social Media class in the Education and Urban Studies Department.
Professor Jackson wanted a way to expose EWC students to the
dynamic discussions taking place on TEDx and TEDTALKS. The
result is TIGER TALKS Experiences.
There is the hope that this will expand through a collaboration with
other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) across
the country and it grows into a national model to teach presentation
skills, the importance of articulation when speaking, research and
writing, blogging, content creation, how to establish a Brand and
even increase the opportunities for HBCU students to network for
jobs, internships and starting careers.

Blogging is important in the Educational Technology course, students
are required to establish a blog on #WordPress and connect their
Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. This is not for entertainment, but to
teach how influential Social Media and content creation are, to build
a positive dynamic digital presence and manage it like a professional.

The skills of writing, presentation and articulation are what is lacking
in graduating students across the nation as industry leaders claim.
Writing is vital as a major communication tool in the majority
of business, medicine, commerce and educational careers.

In to many cases students do not have the opportunity to learn how
to speak to large groups, how to present a PowerPoint in a formal
setting and understand the need to be published as they build their
Brands.

HBCU institutions must be diligent in making sure that their students
are able to compete in global markets that may take them to foreign
nations where the opportunities may become professionally and
financially stable. HBCU institutions must make sure their students
are proficient in writing, presentation skills, blogging online is an
option to teach writing, critical thinking and higher order thinking
skills. Students of color and culture needs to be prepared because
competition for jobs is fierce.

This semester’s event has several students and a host of interested
students and faculty in attendance who look forward to speaking
in the spring semester. The students were congratulated by provided
door prizes and educational resources directed to scholarships and
internships.

mental capabilities that make them smart
creatives and thought leaders, helping your
daughters to understand their personal sexuality
and seeing their value based on their talents and
abilities not sex. If you fail to teach as fathers,
you may be committing a travesty with life-long

As a parent, educator and heavily involved in
Social Media I see the elements of Social Media
Sexting, mental and sexual manipulation, sexual
bullying and self-destruction. Girls and women
must understand that just because you can post
hundreds of “selfies” and “sexties” does not
mean you do so.

Telling your story through your digital content should
come with the knowledge that people will see what
you create and judge you based on the creativity and
innovation you show. This creativity should be done
with wisdom, purpose and common sense.  Parents
make dangerous mistakes by letting their children
have free reign of the Internet without behavioral
expectations and rules. The World Wide Web
can be the Wild Wild West with content that can
range free either on the extreme Left or Right.

There are communities that are represented on
platforms that allow the diversity of the human
mind create places that are comforting and at
the same time can cause the soul to shiver.
Girls especially are attracted to the chance to
“show” themselves beyond their “personalities.”

“I’ am, was always will be a catalyst for change”
but that change must be positive and productive.

This blog “Social Media Sex and Daughters” shares
the value of parenting when girls are young and
impressionable, they do not understand the value
to share that they are more than their bodies. There
is more to girls than a size, color, a shape, cleavage,
or how sexy they can look. Perceptions are dangerous
in the digital age. Fathers must be sure to teach their
daughters the “tricks” of the game boys will use to get
into their daughters __________.

A father has a responsibility not to scare their daughters,
but to educate them on sex and sexuality. Mothers count,
but they are not men.  Daughters cannot afford to learn
from their friends either boys or girls to protect their
“pocketbooks” as the senior women like to reference.
What is private, is private and should be protected….

Social Media provides wonderful networking, and
communication opportunities, girls and women are
participating in coding – Black Girls Code, learning
how to use tech to be entrepreneurs while attending
conferences like Blogging While Brown, networking
in groups like Black Girls Rock, learning socialization
skills in groups like  Girls Inc, Journey Into Womanhood
Empowerment Resources (Jacksonville, Florida) and
Black Girls Book Club.

The online development of collaboration and connectivity
grows to help girls grow cognitively and raise their
self-esteems and self-respect. No longer do girls and
women say tech is just for boys and men, girls
and women are coding, creating dynamic content,
writing books, managing publishing companies. Girls
are thought leaders, and entrepreneurs, Black girls
can proudly claim their BLERD and Geek profiles.
African girls and women are growing into AfiBlerds
and AfriGeeks proudly earning degrees, they are
owning businesses like Anie Akpe, CEO/Publisher

matter whether they’re dark skin, light skin, brown
skin, mixed, hood, nerdy, preppy, loud, quiet or ratchet.”

Business opportunities are increasing so girls and
women should not focus on their body image they
should focus on their Brand and the Marketing aspects.
Women are networking, they are serving on boards,
in committees, forming nonprofits, and educational
initiatives.
Their Brands are worth more than gold, it is the
foundation of their existence and should always be
treated respectfully.
Girls like Jacksonville’s Taylor Richardson and
Natalie McGriff and others are inspiring other
girls to grasp hold of their dreams and grow wings
to fly beyond societal limitations and
exceed expectations no matter color and culture.

Fathers must have those conversations about
pride, hard work, dignity, trust, ethics, morals
and values. Parents must monitor their daughter’s
online activities, not out of fear, but to preserve
reputations and the developing Brands of the
future. It must be taught that, ”sex is a
temporary physical manifestation of temporary
pleasure that if unchecked can be dangerous and
self-destructive.”

Social Media is shaping the way girls and women
are viewing themselves and interacting with

Advertisers know this and will market “sexulization
of girls” through advertising. Talking about sex
and sexuality should be a discussion not a scare
tactic. Parents should share
the reality of pornography, it is not the sensual
event of dreams; it can be violent, degrading and
demeaning.
Girls and women will not get cultural and educational
validation by having multiple sexual partners. The
marketing aspect too look hot, be popular, risque,
sexy, vulnerable/aggressive, girls of color and
culture are not presented in positive situations
when it comes to sex like their white counterparts.

Parents of all colors and culture start early and
have conversations so girls feel comfortable,
confident in who they are and where
they are going in life. Parents talk to your daughters
as they mature, have honest and tough discussions.
Before any girl or young woman gets into bed with
anyone, even in alternative lifestyle’s they need
to get into that persons head first to make sure
they are not making a mistake that will curse them
through adult life.
A girl’s reputation can be destroyed with a single
video, a single picture posted online and even a flash
of experimentation. Put your value ahead of being
popular, being seen as sexy and been just seen as
who you are and what your aspiring to be.

Girls are growing into not just Black Girl Magic or
Women Magic, but Awesome Women of Magic.

If You Think School Is Hard In America

The process of education is an evolving process
of continuous change, modification, and adaptation.
Rigor, differentiation, literacy, comprehension,
assessments and other terms that are used in the
process of educating children from birth to higher
education and beyond. Educators and parents
can become overwhelmed and confused in this
process of education as curriculum’s change.

This blog is influenced by the recent national
discussion on the need for an educated society
and how children are influenced and encouraged
to learn in the classrooms of this nation and
the application of STEM STEAM STREAM.

I wanted to reference the education of students
globally and the educational support of parents
of color and culture nationwide in America.
Parents need to accept their responsibility for the
educational success of their children and to be
involved with the educational process especially
reading and math.
This is NOT to say parents are not involved,
this is in reference to those that make excuses
for not attending parent/teacher conferences,
eating lunch at least once in the school year with
their kids and will not return teacher phone calls
or notes for parental support with disruptive and
struggling students.

Teachers need parental support and parents
need to be actively involved in schools from Pre-K
to High School. As another school year starts thus
the fashion extravaganza will begin. Everyone
wants to look good the first week, but what of
the 175 remaining days of academic rigor and work?

This nation provides a FREE education, supported
by tax dollars. There have been educational
think-tanks, educational committees, and focus
groups that assess and monitor how students are
educated. The universal ideology is that education
is important to the economic welfare of the
people of the United States of America no
matter the color or culture. All children need to
be educated to survive.

One important fact that cannot be ruled out,
eliminated or downplayed is that in this country
education is important. Nowhere else in the world is
there an educational system like the United
States of America. The foundation is based
on parents being the “First Educator” for their
children. The importance of parents is stated as:
“Parenting involves taking responsibility seriously,
taking advantage of every opportunity to enhance
children’s learning, and providing children with
challenges that contribute to growth and development.”

Parental responsibility is to teach basic
foundational skills and reinforce these with
children before they start school. As an
educator of over 20 years and Teacher of the
Year in my district, I want to share
with parents that interaction with children
and the experiences that are provided can
guide children’s growth and development.

Children should be taken to the library
to build respect in the empowerment of
reading and literacy, they will appreciate
reading when they see their parents excited
about reading.
Children taken to the museum they will
appreciate culture, diversity and historical
connections that they are part of a global
community of humanity.  Children taken
to science centers they will appreciate
science and technology, understand why
STEM and STEAM are valuable to them.

There is work that needs to be done to
educate children and it starts at home. No
matter the educational level of parents, all
parents want the best for their children, but
sometimes need guidance and help.

the writing process. Sometimes writing
will be in a zone of creativity and innovation
to create new content that has an intended
outcome, but sometimes the outcomes are unknown.”

The writings and interviews of Nigerian writer,
poet, storyteller, academic and parent are
transferable to the art of blogging.

Telling a story is not dependent on the
platform whether it is digital or the
traditional paper platforms. Creating a
story comes from the need to share
information that a person thinks is
important and valuable. There is an effort
to put information down that you feel
will benefit others.

Writers like Achebe from Nigeria, Africa,
even though he has passed are able to
transfere the passion of writing to bloggers
because those that blog share on a platform
that is connected globally. Information is
shared at the speed of thought on platforms
like WordPress/Blogger, Microblogging also
known as Twitter, Pinterest, Podcasting
where content is downloaded to digital
devices and even on audio/video platforms.

Lessons need to be shared with new
generations of bloggers, content creators,
thought leaders, innovators, creatives as
each generation has a story to tell.
Successful “bloggers” which is a term
that is transferable across platforms
should understand the past history of
storytelling and the connection of
embracing personal experiences.

Time for African Americans and Africans
to tell their stories.
1. African American and African writers
need to understand things need to be
done to help their communities instead
of complaining and using Social Media
to “throw people under the bus.”

2. African American and African writers
need to understand their place in the
world. That they have a responsibility
to tell their story.

3. African American and African writers
need to understand who their inspirations
are. Who infleunces their growth and
share that knowledge.

4. African American and African writers
need to understand if they do not write
truth to life they are creating a “Gap
in the Bookshelf” in the stories of people
of color and culture.

5. African American and African writers
need to understand the importance of
stories of peple of color and culture.
Mainstream media does not show the “best”
of people of color and culture every day.
It is the importance of bloggers of color
and culture that can collectively get the
stories out.

6. African American and African writers
need to understand what picture they are
painting of their culture and their people.

7. African American and African writers
need to understand as Achebe states,
“fiction can be written as true,” by the
reliance on factual elements.

8. African American and African writers
need to understand that in their blogs
resonate with their readers and create
emotion and action.

need to understand the “human story,”
and the “human condition” to feel their
readers.

need to understand that storytelling is
a creative art and a way of influencing
thought and perceptions.

need to understand the importance to stay
connected and grounded to their inspiration.

need to understand it is valuable to be
connected between their research and
personal experiences.

to share a story. The diversity of Social
Media allow for content to be spread globally
and through divere platforms.

means that bloggers/writers must remain
students of literature.

need to understand that when Chinua Achebe
states, “storytelling is a threat to anyone
in control,” or “seeking to take away control,
the storyteller has a different agenda”
than those in control.

need to understand they cannot afford to be
selfish or self promoting with their talents.
They cannot put themselves ahead of their
readers.

Part 2 Chinua Achebe and How to Build a Blog

Bloggers cannot just sit on their asses,
they need to be involved in their communities,
attending community meetings, volunteering
with youth, teens and young adults. The
way to build an online community is to be
involved in the community. Online
communities have a responsibility to
support offline communities that have a
mission and vision to help youth, teens,
young adults and even elders.

Listed are things bloggers need to
be aware of when building content and
sharing information. From Achebe, Soyinka,
and other writers locally or globally the
skill of storytelling is not easy. The
act or blogging is not always easy because
of the intended outcomes can be varied and
the audiences ability and willingness of
listening and engaging.

African Americans and African Writers
need to blog to tell their stories. No one
else can do that. The history of colonization,
slavery, Civil Rights, Racism, Colorism,
raising children of color and culture all are
stories that need to be told. For to long mass
media has told the false, half truths, lies and
fallacies of African Americans, Africans and
others of color and culture.

need to understand they have a cultural
responsibility to protect their culture
from being mentally colonized and enslaved.

need to understand it is important to
keep a mind open to embrace creativity
and imagination.

need to understand they cannot allow
others to tell one side of a story, nor
create a false story.

need to understand their power in creating
memories through their writing.

need to understand they should be inspiring,
encouraging, and engaging other writers of
color and culture who want to be writers.

and speaking to children, teens and young

“parents/adults must not keep children
grounded.” Exposure is important to plant
the seeds of knowledge and direction.

college graduate, in politics, speak
articulately, read as the same level,
or have the same life experiences.

effort worth the effort of writing.

role models to guide them.

In this world of diversity and culture
bloggers must be careful of their souls,
their morals and values. Their content will
never go away so should be careful and
cautious of how the world perceives them
and their associations.
