Girls and Bullying: Pain and Potential PTSD

Girls of all ages are involved in online
communication that has exceeded face to face
communication. They are sharing photos, videos,
emoji’s and other graphical displays of emotions
and friendships. BFF is a new word in the English
language.
The increase of a girl’s social life has transitioned
to digital relationships that travel across the
digital languages of Social Media sites.

Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and other
forms of digital communications are dominated by
the chatter of digital words, phrases, acronyms
and the occasional use of profanity and sexual
dialogue. A girl or young ladies digital life is
different than how they are in real life situations.

Direct interaction creates opportunities for
dialogue that can be respectful and caring. Technology
has opened a Pandora’s Box to potential vicious Bullying,
Cyberbullying, Cyberstalking and Sexting. These actions
have created a change in digital interactions and
etiquette. It is dangerous not to know what
Cyberbullying and Cyberstalking are.

Girls must be taught how to “talk” digitally to each
other and not to bully, or in the case of technology
Cyberbully. Brooklyn a student says that, “Parents
need to observe their child’s accounts to see what
they are doing to keep their children especially girls
safe from predators and others that would do them harm.”

The end of each school year is creating fear,
apprehension and even causing parents pulling their
children out of school early because of fear from
violence as retribution of past offenses even if it is
a minor verbal altercation or a digital misunderstanding.
Too many children and teens do not value life as it
should be valued and their natures are more violent and
less compassionate. Communication with wireless devices
has created a paradigm shift for parents, educators, and
even law enforcement in the attempts to monitor, educate
and prevent bullying actions by girls and women.

Statistics show that girls will bully using technology
more than boys and a girl’s online activity is more
vicious. Even television media has shown true to life
movies about girls bullying in the traditional sense in
the school environment and also through digital means.
The unfortunate deaths by suicide and attempted suicides
are reported weekly on national news stations that bullying
and cyberbullying creates havoc emotionally and
psychologically for girls. Girls as they mature into
women have stated that they suffer from PTSD because of
the stress resulting from bullying through middle and high
school.

Speaking at national conferences to teens and young adults,
I have spoken with women in their 30’s and 40’s that carry
the emotional scars of bullying from middle and high school.
The reality that many parents do not understand or are in
denial, girls are more likely than boys to participate in
cyberbullying, (cyber-bullying via text messages or online
via Internet).

Sharing information to empower and engage parents as the
school year comes to a close, parents need to check their
children’s Social Media accounts and their digital devices.
Parents need to understand their children, who their friends
are and even associates. The recent deaths of girls from
fights have made national attention and a warning sign to
parents. It cannot be said that this is a surprise because
there are signs, parents need to recognize them.

Schools cannot be fully blamed for bullying, because at
the end of the day, students go home to their parents,
seclude themselves in their rooms and use their digital
devices to make the lives of other girls and even boys hell
on Social Media. Parents are accountable and responsible
because they are paying for the very devices their children
are using to bully with.

The consequences of bullying do have serious emotional
and psychological consequences that can last a lifetime.
Girls who are bullied have a greater risk for depression
which can lead to drug dependency, alcohol and other
substances. As a teacher in elementary and higher education
here are some tips that may help protect kids from
cyberbullying, but it takes parents being active, engaged
and involved.

Reinforce in your children not to give out personal
information online, when engaged in online don’t fill in
personal information. In online profiles, chat rooms, blogs,
or on web site surveys be careful what personal information
you provide. Not all sites are honest and beneficial.Don’t
ever tell anyone your email or instant messaging passwords,
even your friends or BFF’s.

If someone sends a mean or threatening message, don’t
respond, get a screen capture and save it to report to
school administration or law enforcement. Don’t be a
cyberbully, because you may find yourself on the other
end of being investigated by law enforcement and school
officials. Laws are enforced where all digital devices can
be taken from the home and searched for “evidence” for
cyberbullying.

Knowing the definition of bullying and cyberbullying is not
enough, knowing that anyone can be a bully or can be bullied
is important. Prevention and protection is the goal of my
blog, to empower and educate parents. Parents need to read
student policy and procedure books, they need to read
Internet policies for the school district.
The end of the school year should be a calm transition,
not one filled with dread for the summer,
fearing being bullied, harassed and stalked.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

The power of a woman’s story can be seen as
women work hard and sacrifice to raise their
children to be positive and productive in a society
that is ever changing by cultural diversity, digital
technology, changing spirituality, political controversy
and even the changes in gender lifestyles.

The social awareness of the accomplishments of women
are slowly being shared and highlighted, but the equality
of women are still a struggle for women to gain equability
in their skills to manage more than a family. The societal
dynamics of family have changed in the last 20 years.
Mothers of color and culture have to prepare their children
for a life of diverse challenges that have the potential to
cause mental stresses that may lead to behaviors that affect
cognitive development and societal influences to behaviors
that demand conformity to living and growing to the potential
of girls of color. Mothers motivate, inspire, encourage, engage
and determine the success or failures of their children.

Women’s History Month is not just a moment in the
12 months of a year, but is a continued momentum to
show that women have great potential and are influential
to the success or failures of their children.
Mothers are the foundation of not just the physical
development of children, they provide part of the
genetic makeup that will construct the child within their
wombs, the egg of creation which is fertilized by the seed
of the father. Starting a process that is still scientifically
studied and even on a spiritual level by ministries. The
genetic process is so complex that nature sees fit to empower
women with the responsibility to bring life into this world.

Mothers are an important part of the creation process because
creation saw fit to provide the process of birth with all of the
evolutionary changes, the responsibility did not go to man,
even though he plays a part, the ultimate responsibility is with
the woman, to carry, nurture, feed, protect and lay a foundation
that assures the human species continues to flourish. This
ironically happens for up to 9 months in the womb of a women
even as she carries out her day to day duties as her body changes
in size, shape, hormonal levels and the level of pain inflicted
in the maturation of a fetus that will ultimately be born as an
infant with its own distinct personality.

Mothers are vital to the human race, our species, the continuation
of our race as humans is dependent on mothers to place their lives
at risk, literally, to bring a life into this world. Childbirth is said to
be the closes thing to death for both child and mother. The labor
process is unpredictable and unstoppable.

What more important responsibility is there for women to bring
life into this world, to be mothers outside of career aspirations?
Life anew, that has a transformative effect on the broad environment
and generational development of human life.
What are mothers to do outside of prayer, for them to build strong
children, to enhance the positive abilities of their children and take
advantage of their environmental conditions? Mothers should
understand that if you do not plan to succeed you plan to fail. That
your current situation is just that, a current situation and does not
mean permanent placement. Even if things are going well, plan for
continued stability for the future because our world depends on it.
In too many cases man brings death and destruction, but the balance
is women who bring life and the potential to make the world a
better place for each generation.

The will of a women can be found in her continued mission to
improve herself through a strong prayer life, continuing education,
promotion in employment, seeking technical certifications and
licenses are the best ways to ensure moving forward in life and
being a role model for children and others around them. We see
locally and nationally mothers that inspire their girls and boys to
greatness, productivity, inspiration and civic engagement to
help others, not to be selfish with their God given gifts,
but to inspire others.

My mother inspired me in the area of technology, preparing
me for a career as a trainer, educator, speaker and even in ministry.
I was also inspired later in life by my sister Tiffany Duhart years
ago to blog when I had no clue what a blog was, to embrace my inner
Blerd and Nerd. To both of them and my grandmother who saw things
in me and prayed for me, I’m eternally grateful that God blessed me
with them. There have been men that helped along the way, and they
too I thank, but my beginning started because a mother, grandmother
and a sister saw things in me I did not see in myself. Even today
sisters motivate me to press forward.

There is no easy ticket, no magic wand and no specific special
talent that needs be applied for success, just listen to mothers,
grandmothers, aunties that have life experiences. Common sense
provided from mothers have saved lives, created successes,
motivated us beyond or limited perceptions and moved mountains
of challenges and elevated children and families from depressive
situations.
Girls and women, continue to focus on where you want to be as a
person and never give up on your dreams. Never compromise
your integrity and personal self-worth, self-pride and self-esteem.

This Women’s History Month should contribute to the wakeup
call for girls to be the best you can be, never compromising the
value for and of yourself, your gender and your potential for greatness.

STEAM” who loves technology and comic books. Elisha maybe
a future reader using his youthful exuberance and growing
theatrical abilities.

Social Media: Parents vs Teens

The holiday seasons are coming quickly, new high tech devices
are allowing teens to increase their Social Media connections
with friends. Social Media networks like; Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, Vine, SnapChat, Youtube and others allow for the
exchange of all types of social information both positive and
negative.
SM by teens are their primary means of sharing information and
posting personal content. Parents should be prepared for the
increase in digital connections, Smartphones, tablets and even
watches open diverse challenges to managing personal information
in which some type does not need to be share.

Wireless technologies have allowed for unprecedented access
to people and data. Because of the easy access to online resources
there should always be open communication between youth/teens
with their parents. The distractions and dangers of life can quickly
bring tragedy and second guessing of parental responsibilities
and accountability for young lives when there is death or injury
from Cyberbullying and misunderstood intentions.

Parents cannot allow Social Media to be a baby sitter for their children
just as television should not be a substitute for parental engagement
and teaching social skills. Parents may find it difficult to start a
conversation about the use of technology and Social Media; start
the conversation about the inclusion of Social Media in a teen’s life,
parents should understand that their children may know more about
technology, but parent knows more about life and survival skills.
This fact alone can strengthen the conversation on safety and survival
in a world of diversity in ideologies, economic status and educational
access. Social Media is a snapshot of our society, being connected to
multiple people with diverse backgrounds.
There are growing numbers of youth and teens being lured and seduced
into prostitution, sexual torture and murdered from online meetups.
Technology is necessary, an important part life, the bond between
families cannot afford to be disrupted by electronic devices.

Communication is in a digital arena not verbal so Social Media, texting
and digital interaction is common with teens. This interaction is not
always sexual, but the sharing of social information can lead to situations
of personal invasion. Because of the intrusiveness of technology parents
need to set boundaries just as they would if their child or children were
at a playground or a swimming pool.
Parents need to monitor what is being shared online, some information
may be dangerous or lead to future problems in developing relationships
or potential child stalkers becoming friends with unguided and
unmonitored youth and teens.

As a Teacher of the Year, STEAM educator, a national/international
Blogger and presenter of Social Media Safety, with over 25 years in
public education and higher education, many teens lack the appropriate
processing skills to manage their Social Media content. What they put
online can be used as a benefit when they become adults or a hazard
during the developing teen years.
A quick comment, a moment of frustration, the thrust of jealousy and a
period of anger can cause teens to post comments that have profanity,
potential slanderous statements or even threats of physical or property
damage.

Parents cannot afford to be negligent, ignorant or complacent in their
child or children’s social media activities. “Parents need to be involved
and engaged even checking phones, tablets, laptops and desktops”
William Jackson 2012.
Stages of development for online behavior are a gradual process
requiring parental supervision and parental communication. Schools
cannot be responsible to totally teaching technology literacy. Canada,
France, Britain and Australia all have national media literacy standards
for students in their educational curriculum; the United States because
the educational system is decentralized does not have a national model.
Parents must be the guiding force of reason and education outside of
the school. Parents set the tone for Social Media morals and ethics
in Social Media conduct.

A very important reminder anything that is put online stays online and
never goes away. Even if a student tries to delete their online content
it is backed-up on a server someplace and can be accessed.

Social Media: Parents vs Teens
Parents should spend more time with their kids and teens, parental
involvement is important and contact not through the Internet or cell
phones. Communication is becoming a lost art between parents and
their children. Children and teens will post personal information online
faster than thinking that they should not. This presents potential
dangers that are broad and can influence future safety of the family.
Talking can save your child’s life or the families from Internet and the
dangers that are a real and present danger.
