The ability to communicate using digital tools is important
in an age of progressive digital technologies. Mobile tech
has changed the way people are communicating daily.
Smartphones, tablets, watches and other digital mobile
devices allow for new methods to connect with family,
friends, and professional learning communities.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Software is becoming increasingly
intelligent and intuitive.
Whether you have an Android
or an iPhone the ability to
connect, collaborate and communicate has become
simplistic and literally at the touch of a button(s).
If you want to be taken seriously and looked upon as a
valuable resource you have to talk the talk, using the
words that connect like minds and even like goals.
No matter the age, generation, gender or life style

Use your Social Media platforms to:
1. Be conversational
*the range of applications is as flexible as the type of
devices that are available.
*conversation is the foundation for networking and
building relationships.
*The power is in the software.
2. Share content – Sharing is Caring
*sharing content is important to growth and development
*the ability to create content, share content and archive
allows for influencing the present and the future.
3. Write / Blog Content is King
*to be a better blogger, you must write as much as possible.
*content creation is king as stated by Bill Gates in many
seminars and conferences.
*write to live and live to write is practiced in academia.
4. Build your e-Reputation, e-Personality, e-Reliability
*having a reputation or a personality requires some type
of Social Media presence.
*the debate is still going on which one is better,
*the more the better depending on what audience you are
trying to reach.
5. Learn to listen
*teach yourself to listen to people talking about how
they use technology.
*learn the difference between integration, implementation,
and initiation of technology.
*join Meetups, EdCamps, and other social events that
connect like-minded people.
6. Take the time to read
*even though YouTube can provide almost all your instructional
needs, reading still cannot be beat.
*read about those that are innovators and smart creators.
7. Collaborate – Cooperation – Association
*CCA to build your knowledge, build your Brand and learn how
to Market your ideas and skills.
8. Understand your community
*you cannot be friends with everyone on all Social Media platforms.
*learn which sites are beneficial to your needs.
*don’t lose your time on useless Social Media sites that are
not productive.
9. Say more with less
*Twitter is 140 characters
*how can you communicate in 140 characters or less effectively?
10. Social Media is a “pull system” you must know your audience.
*understand who your following
*why your following someone
*who is following you
*why are they following you
11. Find your Niche
*finding your Niche is important

to remember you?
*content rarely goes away,
it is archived, saved,
packaged and stored someplace
online.
*you create a digital legacy with your content.
*people will remember you through your content.
13. Build a personal mission statement
*when using Social Media build a mission statement
that can help you grow academically and professionally
14. Remember Social Media is about relationships.
*building relationships is important.
*how do you build relationships online?
*remember everyone does not have the same
mission as you are so be careful.
15. Develop your elevator pitch for those unique
times when you have one opportunity to make an
impression.
*Social Media may provide a one-time shot to pitch
your ideas to the “right” person so have your pitch
ready to go.
16. You cannot be shy in the Blogging / Technology
Industry.
*technology opens opportunities nationally and
globally as never before.
*being shy will get you literally no where.
*to be successful you cannot afford to be shy or
hesitant
17. Don’t view other bloggers as competition,
they are opportunities for collaboration.
*sometimes it is better to collaborate not compete
18. Brand vs Visual Identity
*learn the difference.
*how do people see you online?
19. Your Brand is your Promise
*your Brand continues to grow as your knowledge
and abilities grow.
*mentor and be a role model.
20. Your Brand and Niche should be a safe place,
make sure your association is approachable.
*what type of people are you associated with?
*do they have the same direction, mission and goals
as you do?
21. Be Authentic
*no one can be you, but you.
*don’t try to be something you are not
*don’t steal someone else’s ideas
*think about what you bring to the table.
22. Social Media can bridge Culture
*diversity is a good thing.
*diversity is a verb.
23. Be careful about being assimilated
*assimilation, association and application are
important.
24. You do not have to know everything
*apply what you learn and allow yourself to grow.
25. Attend conferences and Socials
*connect, socialize and be friends.

This blog was originally written in 2013,
much has changed in the opportunities for
children of color and culture to grow and
develop into Nerds, Blerds, Geeks and
Entrepreneurs.

In our educational systems nationwide,
where children of color and culture are taught
not just the educational curriculums and
strategies for successfully passing
assessments, educators teach the value of
education by integrating project based learning.
It should be known that the development of
knowledge in itself is not transformative,
the application of knowledge, creativity
and innovation is powerful.

The educational initiatives of STEAM, STEM,
STREAM CSTEAM and even STEM2 are
vital to prepare youth for current and future
careers. Students of color and culture
do not care about statistics, graphs, charts,
Excel spreadsheet. They want to know how
they can use these skills to provide for their
families and build their communities.

This is why educators at all levels must
make their instruction relevant and apply
to real world situations not to pass a
mandated state assessment.

The investment of STEAM Science
Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics
can be seen in the development of hand-on
projects, collaborative and cooperative learning
activities that show the significance of
hands-on learning that is interactive and
educationally engaging for students.
These activities are also the precursors to
career selections for students that have
unknown talents and abilities to do great things
in this world. Teachers cultivate and nurture
critical thinking skills in their students.

Society can no longer teach with old school
traditional lecture methods. Today’s students
are interactive, they need to be engaged, involved
and even entertained.  Instruction in schools can
no longer be teacher centered in its direction to
teach concepts, strategies, standards, there needs
to be a transition to student centered learning in
today’s schools even in higher education. Tech
labs must be available to allow individual
research and learning, group learning and gender
collaboration.

STEAM/STEM integration encourages students
to be the center of attention in learning, the teacher
sets the parameters and learning objectives to
accomplish tasks that are fashioned
to teach diverse areas of interactive learning.
The students understand that learning can be
fun first, engaging second, and transformative
third.  The connections from Science
Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics
involving higher order and critical thinking skills.
When incorporating the “R” for Reading students
apply comprehension for understanding. Instead
of hearing from teachers that they “better”
understand what is being read, there is a “reason”
why comprehension is important.

Chinua Achebe, Nigerian author states that
children should never be afraid of reading and
should be excited to go to libraries and museums.
It is the responsibility of parents to make this a
reality.

See Dick and Jane run up and down a hill do not
cut it, students could be building bridges, rockets
or robots along with reading what is the speed of
Dick if he falls down the hill or how fast would
Jane have to run to catchup with Dick as he rolled
down the hill. Reading is important to follow
directions to complete tasks, but teaching it like a
Dick and Jane book ruins the excitement and
the fun!!!

Real world experiences in careers shows children
of color and culture to see past traditional careers,
they get a chance to see what the future potentially
holds.

STEM2 (squared) integrates Medical aspects
and CSTEAM incorporates Computer
initiatives. Students are learning that they can be
Geeks, Nerds, Blerds, and start their own businesses.
Society cannot afford to dumb down learning because
early childhood students are watching Star Wars,
Star Trek, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers,
Iron Man, and Captain America, they’re wondering
how they too can build robots, drones, spaceships
and have an influence in the world.

News reports from NPR show that the direction for
careers is changing and students must be exposed
to information and resources to keep up with change.

The Airforce is in need of drone pilots, children
of color and culture and women need to consider
careers that open new directions and demand new skills.

What was once thought of as out of bounds for
children of color and culture are now new
opportunities to receive high tech education and
advancement not seen in the last 10 years.

Parents, especially parents of color and culture must
understand the future implications
in employment and careers for their girls and boys.
Higher educational access to resources that
encourage community engagement and a higher level
of interaction and educational attainment
for students that involve learning outside the classroom
and involved in the community.

If parents do not want their children to return home
after graduating from college or stay home
after high school graduation they must continue
to be parents, to guide their children far away to start
careers that allow for occasional visits. If you have adult
children, you understand the importance of stable,
progressive careers that allow your children to grow
away from home.  To spread their wings to fly….

The choice is simple for 180 days of school, learning,
growing, exposure and adapting
to new ideas for development, teachers must
challenge their students engagement and
build their intellectualism and how to apply
their intelligence. There should not be any
consideration of color, culture, gender of lifestyle.

All students matter in any educational
arena and teacher must be prepared to teach the
diversity of our world.

The Florida Department of Education initiative:
Dads Take Your Child to School Day! The Department
of Family and Community Engagement is partnering on
this initiative. This event is similar to the Million Father
March that was held on the first day of school nationally.

As part of  this initiative, fathers are asked to show their child
that they value and support their education by bringing them
to school on Wednesday, September 28th and that they
commit to being involved in their learning throughout the year.

This is a great opportunity to increase parental engagement,
especially among fathers, for the entire 2016-17 school year.
Last year, fathers, grandfathers, foster fathers, stepfathers,
uncles, cousins, big brothers, male caregivers, mentors and
family friends all showed their support for students across
the state through their participation. The excitement for
many students is continuing to blossom and the work
continues for academic growth and success. Fathers are
very important in the process of education, helping in laying
a foundation for the importance of maturing academically
and socially. Being a father requires continuous giving,
generosity, kindness, compassion, empathy, love and
dedication to another life besides their own.

Education is a life-long process that is influenced by
parental priorities and influence.

These are suggestions from a father, educator, and
community activist to encourage fathers to
participate and be engaged in the educational
process of their children from early childhood to
higher education.

1. Fathers respect your child’s teacher(s)

One way to support education is to model respect for
teachers and administrators. Fathers speak more by
their actions than words, so visit schools and praise
teachers and administrators.
2. Fathers spend time in the school
Even though it might be tough to visit schools at
least once a month it makes a world of difference
in a child’s behavior and academic success. Spending
time means sacrificing a lunch time, overtime or
buddy time. The rewards are great, just look in
your child’s eyes and see.
3. Fathers listen to teachers not talk at them
Sometimes it is more valuable to listen than to speak.
Fathers must trust teachers to tell them the truth about
their children even if the truth hurts or challenges
making changes to discipline, doing homework,
requiring tutors or not participating in sports or after
school activities. The priority of school is education.
4. Fathers discipline with Love
Many of us have humorous stories of being disciplined
when we were of youthful vigor and energy. We
understood later we were wrong in some of our actions
and choices and that discipline was done with love.
So fathers must continue to have love in their hearts
and minds and discipline fairly and with love.
5. Fathers are Role Models
Fathers are the first role models, even when we don’t
think our kids are watching, they are and other kids do
too. So our actions speak louder than words. We can’t
say “do as I say and not do as I do” because we
send the wrong messages and set our actions and
words up to be hypocritical and without meaning.
6. Fathers are Teachers
When a father teaches it is by his actions not always
by his words. The first teacher should be the child’s
parents. They establish the foundation for future success.
Even if not a great student in school fathers can teach
their children from their mistakes to help their children
to be better academically and socially.

7. Fathers  should share meals
A great time to share is when eating together. This is a
relaxing time to joke, share, encourage, engage in fun
conversation. Sharing meals should not be serious times,
but memorable ones starting with prayer.
Communication should be two ways that encourage the
kids to ask questions too.
8. Fathers Read to their Children
When my children where toddlers until middle school
their mother and I read to them at various times  during
the day and when it was bed time. This created an
atmosphere where reading was fun. When
they were able to we allowed them to read to us. Even
though we divorced I still read to my children to keep
the consistency and fun of it. Fathers that are not strong
readers should read to their level and build as their
children build. Learning together should not be an
embarrassment it should be a cooperative effort to
show comprehension and literacy are vital.
9. Fathers Show Affection
Fathers cannot afford to be “hard” and unemotional,
this creates unstable emotional behaviors in children
that cause confusion and conflicting emotions for
stability and expression. Fathers have to model love,
proper affection, sensitivity, common sense,
compassion, tenderness. These are what children
need to learn to function in society.
10. Fathers Job is Never Done
At the time of this writing 2016 both my children
are in college, working, driving and in some
capacity they are still dependent on me. Fathering
is a lifelong responsibility even when children are
maturing into adults themselves. Fathers are the
cushions, the barriers that God has placed to make
the world less scary, less threatening and less
depressing when the challenges of life attack
our children.

Children need to know that daddy will be there
not just for money, but for encouragement, advice,
praise, love, prayers and sometimes just a silent
shoulder to listen and arms for reassuring hugs.
Fathers you must decide what kind of father you
want to be, it is a choice and personal decision.
Don’t try to be like any other father but who you
are. Don’t be fake, foolish or fraud, your children
will see right through you.
It is ok to be scared, nervous and apprehensive,
no one has all the answers, you have more life
experiences than your children so use that to
build on as a foundation of support and love.
