If You Think School Is Hard In America

The process of education is an evolving process
of continuous change, modification, and adaptation.
Rigor, differentiation, literacy, comprehension,
assessments and other terms that are used in the
process of educating children from birth to higher
education and beyond. Educators and parents
can become overwhelmed and confused in this
process of education as curriculum’s change.

This blog is influenced by the recent national
discussion on the need for an educated society
and how children are influenced and encouraged
to learn in the classrooms of this nation and
the application of STEM STEAM STREAM.

I wanted to reference the education of students
globally and the educational support of parents
of color and culture nationwide in America.
Parents need to accept their responsibility for the
educational success of their children and to be
involved with the educational process especially
reading and math.
This is NOT to say parents are not involved,
this is in reference to those that make excuses
for not attending parent/teacher conferences,
eating lunch at least once in the school year with
their kids and will not return teacher phone calls
or notes for parental support with disruptive and
struggling students.

Teachers need parental support and parents
need to be actively involved in schools from Pre-K
to High School. As another school year starts thus
the fashion extravaganza will begin. Everyone
wants to look good the first week, but what of
the 175 remaining days of academic rigor and work?

This nation provides a FREE education, supported
by tax dollars. There have been educational
think-tanks, educational committees, and focus
groups that assess and monitor how students are
educated. The universal ideology is that education
is important to the economic welfare of the
people of the United States of America no
matter the color or culture. All children need to
be educated to survive.

One important fact that cannot be ruled out,
eliminated or downplayed is that in this country
education is important. Nowhere else in the world is
there an educational system like the United
States of America. The foundation is based
on parents being the “First Educator” for their
children. The importance of parents is stated as:
“Parenting involves taking responsibility seriously,
taking advantage of every opportunity to enhance
children’s learning, and providing children with
challenges that contribute to growth and development.”

Parental responsibility is to teach basic
foundational skills and reinforce these with
children before they start school. As an
educator of over 20 years and Teacher of the
Year in my district, I want to share
with parents that interaction with children
and the experiences that are provided can
guide children’s growth and development.

Children should be taken to the library
to build respect in the empowerment of
reading and literacy, they will appreciate
reading when they see their parents excited
about reading.
Children taken to the museum they will
appreciate culture, diversity and historical
connections that they are part of a global
community of humanity.  Children taken
to science centers they will appreciate
science and technology, understand why
STEM and STEAM are valuable to them.

There is work that needs to be done to
educate children and it starts at home. No
matter the educational level of parents, all
parents want the best for their children, but
sometimes need guidance and help.

We are looking for works about and by
Black Women

This blog is not about just one color or
culture, but about the value and importance
of reading, literacy, comprehension and
creativity of writing for all children.

The summer has made its appearance and
kids are excited about the opportunities of
“freedom” from schools across the nation.
Parents should still have their children
engaged in learning opportunties by visiting
library events, museum viewings and cultural
events that engage kids with fun
learning activities.

Reading and writing during the summer are still
important and the the power of the written word
has been seen for thousands of years, individuals
and groups sharing thoughts, ideas, impressions,
feelings and to tell the life histories of
people and cultures.

Children, teens and young adults should be
introduced to writing as a way to learn how to
express their feelings, dreams, passions and
the challenges that they face. Writing can be
used as a coping mechanism and teach how to
manage the emotional diversity of children,
especially children of color and culture.
To develop intellectual thought and creativity.

Various cultures and societies have their
influences in writing as early blogging
(in my humble opinion). Chinese culture
writing was determined to come not from a
god but an ancient sage named Ts’ang Chieh.
He was a minister in the court of the legendary
Huang Ti (Yellow Emperor). While not godly the
invention of writing was supposed to serve as
a communication tool between heaven and earth.
The culture of writing has historical
importance around the world. Diverse
cultures througth history shared their
stories throught storytelling orally until
writing was established and education
advanced.

Blogging on a digital format continues to change
as writing is manipulated, transformed, dissected,
adapted and tailored to the increasing integration
of technology tools and platforms.
The foundation is the human mind that conceives in
thought the words that are transcribed into
written or typed words. In a way these words are
already in an electrical format because
thoughts are generated by the synapses
of the mind, thus electrical impulses
and birthed by the hands onto the materials for
publication.

Formats can be seen from the dynamic
platforms being used from Blogger, WordPress,
Twitter (Microblogging), Tumblr, Google+ and
even Ghost to name a few. Children, youth and
teens can embrace the diversity and creative
characteristics of blogging and learn to be
innovative in their words, phrases and extention
of their views. Writing helps
to develop vocabulary in children, making it
fun to combine words into stories. It is
wonderful to see a teen excited about reading
and the process of writing.

Looking at the 15 Best Blogging Platforms

it is clear that blogging will remain as an important
historical tool to share and disseminate information
on multiple levels and students need to learn how
to write, the importance of the
writing process and that it can be fun.

Many children are excited to share their thoughts
with art work and drawing, this is the creative
centers of the brain, writing also encouarges the
mind to form ideas, challenges connections and
breeds innovation. What better way to build
character.

Children should be taught that not to long ago
it was illegal to teach slaves or those of color,
no matter what color or culture to read and write
during the time of slavery not just in America,
but around the world. Today Blogging is
responsible for showing the world the greatness
of people. There is estimated over 12 million
bloggers in America, African Americans need
to take seriously their ability to share stories.

I always encourage people of color and culture
the beauty in blogging because it allows
the expansion into other areas of digital
communication. A platform of expression on
levels that allow for intellectualism where
students should be moving towards.
Students should understand blogging allows the
writer (them) to be creators in this age of
digital media that is changing social
interaction, allowing for collaboration,
a paradigm in alliances of the mind and taking
social networking to levels of
unprecedented growth.

Children, teens and young adults, bloggers of
color and culture and those of diverse
languages are important because they create
original content specifically addressing diverse
issues that may never be recognized by
traditional media or ignored
because of a lack of understanding or caring.

No matter the color, culture, gender,
generation and age kids of all ages have
something to say, this summer parents get
your children involved in some type of reading
and writing program to prepare them not
just for the next school year, but for life.

What I Learned from #EdCampMagic 2016

“It’s about sharing.” @sandramc59
as stated by Sandra McConnell about the
recent @EdCampMagic, this statement
can be applied to all EdCamp across the
globe, sharing resources, sharing
knowledge, sharing best practices and
sharing the love of teaching.

The involvement of teachers in professional
development opportunities drastically
improves the teaching ability of teachers.
Teachers learning from teachers helps to
solidify the value of teacher to teacher
sharing of best practices, applying creativity
and innovative uses of technology and
understanding better the cultural dynamics
of the diversity in our schools and classrooms.
The goal is to “share” with each other,
sharing knowledge whether it is one year of
teaching  or over 30 years, everyone can
contribute, everyone is respected and everyone
is valued.

#EduMatch meets at #EdCampMagic

Attending #EdCampMagic allows for teachers
of diverse experiences, generations, cultures and
demographics to  learn from each other. Everyone
is valuable in their contributions because there is
no one way to teach children. The curriculum may
be the same but, the presentations and applications
are diverse depending on the availability of
technology and teaching resources.

The educational curriculum’s of this nation are
embracing more technology, but districts are
struggling with the implementation of the
combining of diverse teaching abilities with
the complexity of integration  of tools, platforms,
differential instruction and
the diverse learning styles of children.

#EdCampMagic sessions provided a snapshot of the
experiences of teachers and their application of
tools, platforms and instructional materials that
help to teach students. Teachers helping teachers
in the learning of how to be a better teacher for
their students.

Attending and presenting at #EdCAmpMagic allowed
me to share my teaching experiences and application
of Social Media, STEAM (Science Technology
Engineering Arts and Mathematics and the social
responsibilities of digital content. Several times it
was stated that if school districts are not
implementing some type of Social Media
instruction they are missing out on
unique teaching opportunities. Social Media is so
ingrained in our students lives that they (students)
are being done a disservice if they are not talking
about the morality and ethics of Sexting,
Cyberbullying, Cyberporn and Cyberstalking.
These are the new and much needed areas that fit
into a STEAM / STEM
environment because it involves technology and
communication.

As I stated, I had the attending teachers respond
to me during our discussions about Social Media,
“our digital devices can be our best friend or
worst enemy depending on the type of content
that is developed and posted.” Thus leading into….

What I Learned from #EdCampMagic

1. Teachers are “smart creatives”
adapting diverse instructional elements
to apply in the instructional environment
of their schools and classrooms.
*because our students are diverse in so many
ways, teachers should have diverse strategies
to apply to make learning relevant and applying
to the students cultural, economic and societal
designs.
*no one said it would be easy that is why teachers
need to know their students so they can apply
the correct teaching style to their class and
modify it when necessary.

2. Teachers are “innovators”
*teachers are given digital devices to
integrate in their classrooms, but are not
taught how to implement in teaching and
learning for students.
*with innovation comes integration and
modification to fit the classroom environment.

3. Teachers are “models for learning”
*if teachers are not excited about learning
their students will not be excited.
*setting the atmosphere is important, if the
students see the teacher excited the students
will be also.

4. Teachers are “thought leaders”
*teachers inspire life long learning and how
to apply learning to real life situation.
*the art of thinking is related to rational
understanding and how to apply new learning
to relevancy and relevancy to combining
previous knowledge with new knowledge and
skills.

5. Teachers show the connections between
“generational learning”
*teachers guide learning from the past to the
current and the future.
*how learning is connected across generations
and demographics.

6. Teachers model how interaction is done
for students
*When teachers teach teachers their is an
embracing of strategies that can
be applied to dynamic classrooms.
*students must be provided time to teach
each other and promote peer to peer
instructional opportunities.

7. Teachers talk to each other
* how they talk about each other and the
interaction between teachers serves as a
role for students to model.
*teachers should share as a means to build
professional development opportunities and
as a support system.
*students should understand that teachers
talk and share information on everything
that affects learning.

8. Teachers learn how to apply standards to lessons.
*the elements of learning objectives
*instructional resources and even assessments
must be applied to effectively create a
holistic learning environment for students.

9. EdCamp is growing across the nation to
encourage teacher to teacher professional
development
*sharing best practices
*educational networking
*applying standards to the learning environment
* increased diverse learners in the ever changing
classroom.

10. EdCamp allows teachers to inspire each other
* all teachers need inspiration
*mentoring
*guidance
*continued training
*building of self-confidence and self-awareness
of what students can accomplish.

Girls of all ages are involved in online
communication that has exceeded face to face
communication. They are sharing photos, videos,
emoji’s and other graphical displays of emotions
and friendships. BFF is a new word in the English
language.
The increase of a girl’s social life has transitioned
to digital relationships that travel across the
digital languages of Social Media sites.

Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and other
forms of digital communications are dominated by
the chatter of digital words, phrases, acronyms
and the occasional use of profanity and sexual
dialogue. A girl or young ladies digital life is
different than how they are in real life situations.

Direct interaction creates opportunities for
dialogue that can be respectful and caring. Technology
has opened a Pandora’s Box to potential vicious Bullying,
Cyberbullying, Cyberstalking and Sexting. These actions
have created a change in digital interactions and
etiquette. It is dangerous not to know what
Cyberbullying and Cyberstalking are.

Girls must be taught how to “talk” digitally to each
other and not to bully, or in the case of technology
Cyberbully. Brooklyn a student says that, “Parents
need to observe their child’s accounts to see what
they are doing to keep their children especially girls
safe from predators and others that would do them harm.”

The end of each school year is creating fear,
apprehension and even causing parents pulling their
children out of school early because of fear from
violence as retribution of past offenses even if it is
a minor verbal altercation or a digital misunderstanding.
Too many children and teens do not value life as it
should be valued and their natures are more violent and
less compassionate. Communication with wireless devices
has created a paradigm shift for parents, educators, and
even law enforcement in the attempts to monitor, educate
and prevent bullying actions by girls and women.

Statistics show that girls will bully using technology
more than boys and a girl’s online activity is more
vicious. Even television media has shown true to life
movies about girls bullying in the traditional sense in
the school environment and also through digital means.
The unfortunate deaths by suicide and attempted suicides
are reported weekly on national news stations that bullying
and cyberbullying creates havoc emotionally and
psychologically for girls. Girls as they mature into
women have stated that they suffer from PTSD because of
the stress resulting from bullying through middle and high
school.

Speaking at national conferences to teens and young adults,
I have spoken with women in their 30’s and 40’s that carry
the emotional scars of bullying from middle and high school.
The reality that many parents do not understand or are in
denial, girls are more likely than boys to participate in
cyberbullying, (cyber-bullying via text messages or online
via Internet).

Sharing information to empower and engage parents as the
school year comes to a close, parents need to check their
children’s Social Media accounts and their digital devices.
Parents need to understand their children, who their friends
are and even associates. The recent deaths of girls from
fights have made national attention and a warning sign to
parents. It cannot be said that this is a surprise because
there are signs, parents need to recognize them.

Schools cannot be fully blamed for bullying, because at
the end of the day, students go home to their parents,
seclude themselves in their rooms and use their digital
devices to make the lives of other girls and even boys hell
on Social Media. Parents are accountable and responsible
because they are paying for the very devices their children
are using to bully with.

The consequences of bullying do have serious emotional
and psychological consequences that can last a lifetime.
Girls who are bullied have a greater risk for depression
which can lead to drug dependency, alcohol and other
substances. As a teacher in elementary and higher education
here are some tips that may help protect kids from
cyberbullying, but it takes parents being active, engaged
and involved.

Reinforce in your children not to give out personal
information online, when engaged in online don’t fill in
personal information. In online profiles, chat rooms, blogs,
or on web site surveys be careful what personal information
you provide. Not all sites are honest and beneficial.Don’t
ever tell anyone your email or instant messaging passwords,
even your friends or BFF’s.

If someone sends a mean or threatening message, don’t
respond, get a screen capture and save it to report to
school administration or law enforcement. Don’t be a
cyberbully, because you may find yourself on the other
end of being investigated by law enforcement and school
officials. Laws are enforced where all digital devices can
be taken from the home and searched for “evidence” for
cyberbullying.

Knowing the definition of bullying and cyberbullying is not
enough, knowing that anyone can be a bully or can be bullied
is important. Prevention and protection is the goal of my
blog, to empower and educate parents. Parents need to read
student policy and procedure books, they need to read
Internet policies for the school district.
The end of the school year should be a calm transition,
not one filled with dread for the summer,
fearing being bullied, harassed and stalked.
