The 2018 WordCamp Orlando conference has drawn hundreds
each year to learn about what is new in technology. Attendees
from across the country and even from foreign nations attend
to learn business tips, SEO – Search Engine Optimization
strategies, applying eCommerce tools, business law, web
development, new coding integration, Gutenburg and building
PLNs Professional Learning Networks.

The year’s #WCORL and #KidsCamp has seen presentations
by teens expressing their understanding of where the web is
going and suggestions on the direction the web should take.
Sharing their concerns, visions, innovative ideas for business
development, marketing, building Brands and creating Niches.

Youth, teens and young adults are building businesses and
willing to share their ideas about how the web can help
in Branding and Marketing. These are skills youth, teens
and young adults are learning.

KidsCamp Orlando 2018 theme “SPACE,” directed by
Organizer William Jackson and Co-Organizer Aida Correa
the youth attending from 7yrs old to 14 yrs old were involved in
STEAM related projects that prepared and created their first web
site on the WordPress.com platform. Using the free hosting service
option, the youth attending created a dynamic web presence that
will grow as they grow in their skills and abilities.

The focus on elements of STEAM – Science Technology Engineering
Arts Math/Music to engage youth in learning that is fun, creative and
begs for innovation. Project based learning is a powerful tool for youth
that are autistic and creative thinkers.

STEAM has helped hundreds of youth, teens and young adults see
the value and benefits of using tech to grow in business as an
entrepreneur, sole-preneur and in thought leadership.
KidsCamp are a growing part of every WordCamp conference
because youth, teens and young adults are demanding equal
access to knowledge and developing their skills just as adults are
in an nurturing and networking environment.

As youth grow so does the need for them to be taught how to be
producers of content not just consumers and to start new businesses
for the 21st and 22nd century. Parents can register for both and have
a wonderful experience building, designing, engaging and creating
great memories together while learning from STEAM and STEM
activities.

WordCamp Miami will be Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17,
2019 at Florida International University. The kids camp from 6 to 12
will be run again by William Jackson and Aida Correa and the
youth portion, 13 to 17 managed by Sandy Edwards.

Getting Children Involved in Business with Kids
Camp and WordCamp Conferences

A reflection on WordCamp Miami and its Kids Camp.
The recent WordCamp Miami conference and the
upcoming WordCamp Jacksonville (Saturday,
April 7th and 8th) that have Kids Camp
involved for youth, teens and young adults
from 7 years to teens has shown that youth,
teens and young adults are using Social Media
for more than social engagement, they are
involved in building their Brands, business
transactions, marketing strategies, and other
activities that are entrepreneurial in nature.

The development of new technologies geared to
youth, teens and even young adults are allowing
more to be engaged in online environments through
apps that allow increased communication,
collaboration and children’s business ventures.
Youth, teens and young adults need training at
an early age to teach how to develop a business
relationship and networking.

The numbers of youth attending Kids Camps are
growing. The recent WordCamp Miami had an
attendance over 900 and the Kids Camp had
over approximately 100 participating.

Social Media platforms are allowing those
under 18 to communicate on platforms which
offer no training with online behaviors and do
not address ethics and morals that are important
in business. Because of the potential for
inappropriate actions that could have a high
impact on youths presence and can influence
educational opportunities, employment, and
even relationships in the future, it is key
that youth are trained and mentored.

Many young people ages 13 to 19 struggle with
building stable relationships, often due to
peer pressure, media advertisements and other factors.
Business relationships are different on so many
levels and if parents are not knowledgeable and
involved in some type of business they may not
know how to guide their children in an online
business, e-commerce or building a Brand and
how to Market that Brand correctly.

Parents are increasingly challenged with raising
children in a digital age and incorporating
building online relationships, transferring
online and offline behaviors and the influences
of peer pressure.
As an elementary teacher I regularity have students
from 3rd to 5th grade tell me about Game of Thrones,
Empire, and other content that has adult content,
language and situations.
Kids Camp a component of WordCamp provides exposure
to educators, CEO’s, web developers, coders,
business owners, e-commerce experts and leading
developers that understand how business is conducted
online and being aware of harmful and even dangerous
situations.

As an advocate for parents to be proactive and set
expectations for behaviors online. Have open and
honest discussions with your children about the
potential hazards and encourage them to speak to
if they sense potential dangers.
Parents and their children can be involved in
local Meetups, WordCamp and Kids Camp conferences,
Bar Camp technology Meetups and promote the
entrepreneurial spirit that youth, teens and young
adults have when it comes to creating a Brand and
starting a business.

Empower, Educate, Engage, and Employ youth, teens and
young adults now so they will be the business owners of
the future. Support Kids Camp by allowing more
children to attend and learn.

  1. Why Do You Blog – bloggers must have a reason to
    do what they do. There should be passion and commitment
    when putting fingers to keyboard. Why you blog is a very
    important statement and should have a definite answer and
    purpose.
    During the blogging process “why” may change just as
    content changes, every blogger should have an answer
    as to Why Do You Blog.

    2. Who Is Your Demographic – an important element
    to go along with Why is; Who is your demographic?
    Is there an age group, gender, nationality, lifestyle,
    culture or specific group you want to connect with?
    People enjoy having a connection with bloggers. Any
    successful blogger knows who their audience is and
    tries to give them what they need and to provide
    relevant content.

    3. What Type of Content Do You Share – sharing is
    very important.
    You want your audience to understand that you are sharing
    a part of yourself with them. You’re not thrusting things
    down their throat, but providing something that they need
    or as you grow in your writing giving your readers something
    they think they need. Create the atmosphere of sharing
    which helps in receiving feedback from the
    reader/viewer.

    4. How Do You Support Your Brand
    Do you have a domain name, are you using a free site, is
    there a lot of advertising, is there adult content, video,
    audio, and multimedia?
    Supporting your content on a platform requires some
    research on your part to validate you and build your
    Brand. In the educational, political, and business
    environments you have to backup what you have stated
    with dynamic information links, quotes, and data.
    In your blogging you’re competing with traditional media
    so go that extra step to help readers understand where
    you’re coming from, how it can help them and where else
    they can go for additional resources.

    5. Do You Use Photos, Video, Graphics – The power of
    a picture, video or multimedia element can never be under
    estimated. If there is a video that can be used or you create
    your own do it. This provides an extra element to attract
    and keep readers to your content.
    Search Engine Optimization(SEO) does need help with text
    (words), but additional elements that provide audio
    (podcasting), video (YouTube) and multimedia to create an
    interactive platform. Never be scared to branch off into
    new areas to help engage and excite your readers.

    6. Do You Offer A Service – What can you provide your
    audience? What type of service or services do you have?
    The popular blogs of relationship building, natural hair, nails
    (hands and feet) provide a service that can be seen and is
    engaging.
    There is a service that results can be seen. Think hard on
    what service you can provide if this is your choice. Be sure
    that you can keep your customers happy.

    7. Do You Evolve – One of the important things about
    blogging is keeping and expanding your audience, that
    means evolving.
    No blog stays the same just as people change, there is an
    evolutionary process that writers go through. Just as age
    and maturity happens so should a bloggers content evolve
    because their readers evolve and change. What you wrote
    3 years ago will not be of the same interest for your readers
    now. Their lives have evolved (changed) so as a blogger
    your content must evolve also.

    8. Do You Have a Brand – Can you Brand yourself to
    the public?
    What are you known for, what does the title of your Blog
    bring thoughts and feelings of? Branding is important
    because of the interest it generates in readership. Creating
    a Brand allows for Marketability and potential profits.
    Branding shows you, who you are so the public will make
    that connection.

    9. Can You Be Marketable – to make money is only one
    important aspects of blogging. Eventually a blogger considers
    how can they make money so must be wise in how they Market
    their content.
    This may take a team to get the word out about you and
    promote what you are doing. Social Media tools are diverse
    this must be strategic in application.
    These elements are worth considering and using as a
    guide to anyone blogging. Your blogging content, goals,
    designs and objectives will change the more you blog so be
    ready to make adjustments and evolve to keep pace and
    stay important enough to be followed, read, quoted, inspiring, engaged and influential.
