Parents What’s In Your Wallet for Higher Education

Listening to the challenges that youth face in obtaining
a higher education during Mayor Alvin Brown’s Learn2
Earn Experience parents need to be empowered with
knowledge and just importantly resources.
First Coast Higher Education Alliance (‎)
shared important information with students about finding scholarships,
financial aid resources, fellowships and Bright Future Scholarships.

The popular term “What’s In Your Wallet”
is heard in advertising, creating a line of thinking that
parents can relate to especially when children and higher
education is concerned.

Graduating or soon to graduate youth must take the
initiative to get involved in finding monies for college,
university and vocational education. The competition for
financial aid, scholarships, fellowships and grants is intense.
The application process can be arduous and long, but the
results in receiving money are worth the effort because the
best investment is in education. Parents should encourage
their children to start early in searching for financial aid.
It is not too early to start planning the future of a students
higher education goals.

Parents set time aside where you and your child are not
disturbed in order to do a search and research for information
from the listed scholarships below. This list is just a start;
the rewards are great because they open doors to resources
not available before.

One of the best courses of actions is to contact guidance
counselors for lists of scholarships in areas of specific study
and specific schools. Attending college fairs, workshops and
conferences helps in making smart decisions. Many schools
are now holding college nights, college prep seminars,
educational development workshops to help students access
information for financial aid.
Parents can check at their places of employment to see if
employee monies are available to help with the finances of
putting one or two children through higher educational

The importance of GPA’s, participation in clubs,
connections with organizations, using Social Media and even
writing samples help obtain monies. Students and parents
should leave no stone unturned. The value of a college or
university education should never be down played.

Malcolm X, Carter G. Woodson, Dr. Martin Luther King
and even Tupac Shakur have verified the value of education
and the empowerment for years of obtaining as much
education as possible. A quote from Tupac rings true
even today,” “I want to grow. I want to be better. You Grow.
We all grow. We’re made to grow. You either evolve or you
disappear.” Education helps you evolve so you will not

Being a father of a rising university senior and a rising
high school senior has made me rethink of the value of
education as it relates to finances. I want to encourage
parents to look at your child’s ability to enter college as
an investment to the potential of your child to bring
added stability to the world. To improve the world not
just on a local level, but globally in their desire to be
successful and contributory.

A great deal of the money is being returned because
of a lack of interest, involvement, knowledge and access
to resources. Parents must re-establish in their children’s
minds that no one is going to knock on their doors and
ask if we can use a scholarship. They are not “owed”
money they have to earn.

Higher education is a dream and wish of so many youth
that when a student enters into the realm of academia they
are defeating the statistics of failure especially for Black
youth. Statistics try to show that Black youth are more
likely not to be successful in high education. My view is
that if parents, grandparents, communities and just as
importantly churches support their youth to earn diplomas
from colleges and universities they help to make this dream
a success and reality. We cannot afford to have our own
agendas when children are involved.

I hope these resources provide useful and financial access
to higher education. I cannot vouch for each and every
one of these listed. I have had this list for sometime and
added to it over the years.
Please be mindful of closing dates and admission dates for
writing applications. If any of these are usable I would
appreciate an email. If any of these are outdated and closed
permanently please let me know.

Good luck and best wishes in supporting youth in obtaining
the much needed college and university degree to forge ahead
in this transitioning age of technological achievement and
transformational human development.
Peace, Wm Jackson, M.Edu.
